Most Haunted Places in America

America is known as the land of opportunity. Millions of people live here across the vast expanse of the country. However, not many people know that there are opportunities to get spooked as well. Large parts of America were relatively unknown to the rest of the world till the fifteenth century, so there are many places which really evoke a ghostly feeling. If suspense and mystery are your hobbies, these are the places to be! In this article, we will talk about four such places which are considered to be haunted.

The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado

The Stanley Hotel

The Stanley Hotel is a hub of paranormal activity. Whether it is weird noises appearing to come from nowhere, ghostly figures sighted in different rooms or just strange paranormal activity like a ball of lightning, visitors have described many haunting experiences that they had during their stay here. Sometimes visitors hear noises of children but when they actually go and check they see nothing and the noises stop. There is even a room where a piano is kept and visitors have reported to have heard music being played but some have claimed that the keys move by themselves.

West Virginia State Penitentiary

West Virginia State Penitentiary

The mere mention of a prison can sound spooky to many people. Empty cells behind rods, narrow passages and thick walls make up for a very haunting feeling. However, in case of West Virginia State Penitentiary, that’s not all. It is a very old prison. Not only are there historical records of certain disturbing events that have taken place here, but also the visitors themselves have described sightings and noises which are spooky.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Kentucky

Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Hospitals are not meant to be a place for entertainment or partying, even more so when the lives of people are at stake. Waverly Hills too has its own share of horrifying stories. Both patients and visitors have described having experienced shocking events. There is even a tunnel which was used for transporting dead bodies. Spirits are said to have inhabited the place and various noises have been claimed to be heard by visitors. There has even been a movie and a book based on this location.

The administration now conducts visitor tours of the location, especially around the time of Halloween. It is rumored that some nurses were found hanging, some were pushed out of rooms onto the ground below, etc. It is definitely a very terrifying place to be in. It is not recommended for the faint-hearted.

Alcatraz Prison, California

Alcatraz Prison

The Alcatraz Prison is very popular in many works of art. It is no longer a prison now. However, it does have its own share of notorious inmates and spooky stories, especially because of it being situated on an island. Sometimes weird noises would be heard from behind closed doors, but as soon as someone would open the door, the noises would stop. They would again resume once the doors were closed again.

There are also reports of sobbing and crying noises being heard by many visitors when they are touring the prison. It is believed that these have something to do with the souls and spirits of the prisoners who endured strict punishments here.
